Jimmy Kimmel has been the host of his own show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for almost 15 years. His experience and talent has enabled him to grow a dedicated fan base that looks forward to his original segments such as: “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy”, “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets”, and more recently “Lie Witness News”. In light of the unforeseen and ridiculous GOP candidate, Kimmel created this new segment to catch Trump supporters in their own lies. Kimmel’s staff would venture out to the streets of Hollywood Boulevard and approach random strangers with a specific question pertaining to the election and campaign. Little did the interviewees know that the questions they were being asked, were complete falsehoods. However, due to social pressures and the desire to seem intelligent and informed, the contenders would answer the questions as if they were based on the truth. An example of this new political segment of “Lie Witness News” is down below.
It is obvious from the clip above, that Kimmel enjoys poking fun at Trump and his supporters and Kimmel's techniques compared to other late night hosts were more playful and subtle. However, when Kimmel took the stage recently to host the 2017 Academy Awards, he had no mercy for Trump and his administration. Some of his statements included:
"This broadcast is being watched live by millions of Americans and around the world in more than 225 countries that now hate us…” "I want to say thank you to Mr. Trump," Kimmel said. "Remember last year when the Oscars were considered racist? That's done. Thanks to him." "We're at the Oscars, the Academy awards, you're nominated, you got to come, your families are nominated, your friends. Some of you will be able to come up here on the stage tonight and give a speech that the president of the United States will tweet about in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movement tomorrow." Kimmel was a magnificent host and had the audience laughing during the majority of his presence on stage that night. |
Jimmy Fallon has been the host of "The Tonight Show" on NBC since 2014. He began his comedic career on SNL and later was the host of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". Fallon's lighthearted nature and charming personality has always come through on his show. His show's entertainment contains games and musical segments. Some of his sketches include: "Box of Lies", "True Confessions", and "Lip Syncing Battles", all of which he plays with the celebrity guests he hosts on the show.
More recently, this past September, Fallon hosted the GOP candidate, Donald Trump. This interview was very controversial and sparked arguments against Fallon. Many media critics felt Fallon’s questions were not provocative or challenging enough towards Trump. To see part of the interview for yourself, watch below. This isn't the first time Fallon has hosted Trump on his show. In the past, Fallon has lightheartedly made fun of Trump and Fallon did not taken his political career seriously. He was not reprimanded in the past for hosting Trump because at that point in time no one took his campaign seriously. This time, the interview was during the election and people were enraged that Trump received air time on a Democrat's show. In response to the criticism, Fallon explained, "Have you seen my show? I’m never too hard on anyone. We’ll have Hillary [Clinton] on tomorrow, and we’ll do something fun with her too". Below, is a sketch from the Fallon's show in 2015 with Trump as the guest. Fallon, who is well known for his impersonations of Trump, is interviewing "himself".
Fallon did not take Trump's role in the 2016 election seriously, or rather he did not take his own role, as an influential political commentator, seriously until he hosted Bill Maher on his show. Mayer was a real wake up call for Fallon and helped him realize that his platform reached millions of Americans and how it was important to educate voters that this GOP candidate was unlike any of the ones before. Mayer realized that in reality, nothing was truly funny about Trump's campaign, and in actuality it was awfully frightening. Press the button below to watch Fallon's interview with Mayer.
